My Dream to Reality

The first time I heard the Korean language was underground in the subway tunnel of the Toronto Transit train.

My friend, who at the time went to highschool together with me, was vibing along to a song called All Day Think Of You (A.D.T.O.Y). Naturally, it piqued my interest and she proceeded to explain to me what KPOP was.

Shortly after, once she had successfully turned me into a full-time member of the 2pm, BigBang and BTS fanbase, she introduced me to Korean Drama.

It was at that moment I fell in love.

The sound of the language, the culture, the music, the dramas, my oh my the dramas, it was all so new and exciting to me. The cliches, the predictable yet excitingly refreshing cliches. The 360-degree kiss scenes and the infamous white truck of death scenes; it was like something I had never watched before.

At some point, after obsessing over the dramas for 2-3 years, I realized I could understand and pick up certain words and sentences. I needed subtitles, but I yearned for the days when I wouldn't need them.

Thus, I decided to learn the language.

At first, it was a struggle. I didn't know where to start or who to ask- I wanted badly, to be able to speak fluently and join in on random Korean conversations I would hear on the bus but instead, I decided to join Amazing Talker.

It took 2 tries for me to find my perfect teacher. Yomi K셈 is truly an amazing individual. My classes are comfortable, she takes the lessons at my pace and she encourages me to use the little Korean I know.

Slowly but surely, I'm making my dream of speaking fluently a reality, and I know she'll be there every step of the way to ensure I'm doing it right!

PS Rumour has it that my friend is still vibing to ADTOY on the train to this very day!
