They say a picture is worth a thousand words.
For me, this couldn't be more true. For the past five years, I have been working with a Chinese company that has opened my eyes up to a whole new world -- new sounds, new experiences, and friends.
And behind the art of these new colors that now filled my life was Mandarin. It was all around me and fascinated me. The stories behind each stroke and character were almost beyond my comprehension. But what kept me grounded in my journey to start learning this language were the blossoming relationships I was making abroad.
Thus, these were not simple characters or sounds but faces. Faces that I would become to cherish and even love. Learning Mandarin has allowed me to live and love more fully -- embracing others and celebrating our humanity together.
When my self-study was beginning to plateau, I began to look for a teacher. I had no idea how lucky I would be to find such an amazing teacher as Iris. And I do not say this lightly. I come from a family of teachers. My grandmother was a teacher, my mother is still a teacher, and I am licensed to teach ESL myself. Teaching is an art form, a science, and a skill.
My point being... Iris is phenomenal! Not only did she have prepared materials but I could tell that she was making original materials for me based on things I both requested and that she felt I could use to better facilitate classroom instruction. And did it stop there? No! Emphatically, no. She suggested tv shows, movies, music, poetry, anything that I wanted to be exposed to!
I am eternally grateful to have found such a qualified teacher so that I can proudly represent her in this way. She is my hero! Teachers of this caliber are my hero! Not only has she advanced my Mandarin beyond my expectations but she has even made me better understand how to connect with the people I meet and how people are really speaking in their homes.

I can really relate to "falling for" the language haha!
Although, I'd probably have more free time if I didn't :) - Your story is beautiful and I can see why you like your teacher. Especially because you came from a family of teachers yourself.
Although, to be fair, I think it's kinda impolite to spam, no? For the last two days I've received three messages with suggestion to like and comment someone's story (and get myself promoted doing it. This is why people do it, right?). But people, sending this kind of spam, forget that it affects rating of those who recieve it. You never have an intention to get their lessons, although you are being counted as a student interested in a course. So it affects statistics. Not sure how much but it does. I think that the game should be fair and doesn't harm others. - I commented on your story and I just wanted to congrats you. But I feel like I have to share, too. I thank you for encouraging me. Perhaps my story is different from yours, but we hold the same position and responsibilities for our students that come and join our classes. We learn by teaching and they teach by learning! My English journey started a long time ago since I was I kid. I always felt like I was a different person from my people because I was always engaged in English. As time passed by, I never knew that I had the skills to teach English. When I first started I didn't feel much comfortable about it. As time went by and getting to know different nationalities, totally gives you self-esteem that you can give an attribute. You can do good in this world where we are living. The people I am currently teaching, I would love to thank them, that joins my classes and leave positive reviews, it's just fascinating, the privilege that we had and the hunger to improve your teaching, approaching and being a lovely person to every student that comes into your class.
